1-800-GOOG-411 is the Monday Hack
This is one to put in your cell phone contact list. It is 1-800-GOOG-411. Basically it is a free voice activated information service by Google that not only gives you information on local businesses for free, but connects you for free as well.
I had heard about this but never given it a try until this week. As I was driving to an appointment I realized I had never checked with the Library in Hill City, South Dakota about wireless internet access. (I will be traveling there next month.) So I picked up my cell phone, dialed 1-800-GOOG-411, said the city and state, said library, and got what I was looking for. The computer also asked me if I would like to be connected, I said sure and talked to a very helpful person at the library. (FYI – they do not have wireless but you can plug in for free via a cable.)
You also have the option of, if calling from a modern cell phone, having directions, information, and a map sent to your phone.
If you are a visual learner, check out this cheesy informational video.
For more information you can go to the 1-800-GOOG-411 home page or the about page.

I have been using Goog 411 for a couple of months now, and it is on my speed dial with Jott.com – it has been indispensable.
Why are they doing this has always been a question, here is an interesting article behind Goog 411 and their motivation behind it.

Thanks for the link, Bill. I had read that about the service before but could not place it.
