Are Evangelicals moving towards Obama?
Perhaps. In an unscientific Christianity Today online poll, they have found that their readers are gravitating towards voting for Barack Obama over John McCain.
What do we make of that? Here are a few of my guesses.
1. Christians may be getting sick of the antics of the “religious right.“ Fruitcake anyone?
2. The more likable candidate is winning. For all the issues and talk of the climate of the country, the guy who passes the BBQ test tends to be the winner.
3. The issues Evangelicals care about is becoming greater than just abortion and gay marriage. The environment, health care, etc. are more and more being considered as issues of concern for Evangelical voters.
4. This poll is not accurate. Remember, this was not a cross section of the population.
5. Obama has more energy behind him. Simply put, McCain was most Republican’s second choice. Obama draws crowds that number over 50,000. The excitement that Senator Obama has is reflected in something as simple as an online poll.
What do you think the reason is?
- On Rick Warren, Barack Obama, and what?
- Follow up on Obama, Warren, and AIDS
- The Power of Passion
- And there are how many Evangelicals?
- More on Christians and Mel Gibson

Evangelicals are flocking to Obama for all of the reasons you site and one more;
Last month I finished posting a seven chapter manuscript in response to a statistic announced by The American Family Association. The statistic is “Only six percent of all people who call themselves Christians truly understand the core message of the Bible”.
The statistic was announced about three months ago. I had been working on a manuscript I developed out of my notes in trying to pin point crucial doctrinal issues people are missing. That being that people just do not have a complete understanding of what it is they profess. A person is not a Christian because that person says that they are.
These people who are calling themselves evangelicals do not have an accurate understanding of The Gospel of Jesus Christ. They are easily influenced by well reasoned arguments because they do not know what God’s standard for a particular issue is. For instance, many “Christians” are saying that cival unions and homosexual marriages should be permitted because God would not want us to hurt a person by offending their beliefs. The fact is, we as the church need to defend the church as we would our family. Just as Jesus did when he drove the money changers and merchants out of the Temple. He was protecting the House of God. The only time we see him get violently angry was an example of how assertive the Christian ought to be in defending God’s house today, which is the church. More accurately, the people. I posted an article on this issue at: http://deityquest-jeleasure.blogspot.com/2008/07/blogger-lashes-on-james-dobson.html
