The Heretic’s Guide to Eternity

For several years this provocatively titled book has sat on my shelf…daring me to open it and wrestle with the words inside.  For several years I have put it off…choosing to sit in the comfort of my belief system.  Well, enough guilt took over (and I told myself I would not order any more books [...]

Outliers, the story of success

I really liked The Tipping Point and was also impressed with Blink.  I read Malcolm Gladwell’s blog and enjoy that too.  So I was expecting to be a huge fan of Outliers as well.  Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed.
Malcolm Gladwell promised to turn upside down our understanding of what makes a person successful but unless you [...]

The Year of Living Biblically

I loved The Year of Living Biblically, by A. J. Jacobs.  I think that this is a book that all pastor’s ought to consider reading.  I say this because I found it to be funny, thoughtful, and insightful into the thinking of an open minded non-Christian.
The book is a memoir about a year in the [...]

Glocalization: How Followers of Jesus engage a flat world

As my church has been considering anew how to do missions, one of the books on my to-read list has been Glocalization, by Bob Roberts.  Bob Roberts is the pastor of NorthWood Church in the Dallas area and the author of the blog, Glocal.net.
On the whole, I found this book to be quite helpful and [...]

Discover Your Inner Economist

I loved Freakonomics.  I devoured Stumbling on Happiness. I enjoyed immensely The Tipping Point.  I was fully engaged reading The Wisdom of Crowds.  I was fascinated by The Progress Paradox.
All of these books fall into the pop-psychology genre I so enjoy.  I love this look into the human nature.  I find fantastic sermon illustration in [...]

The Contrarian’s Guide to Knowing God

I read a good number of books by mega church pastors to plagiarize gleen ideas for sermons. Most of these books end up shelved – not being of much value other than the illustrations and quotes. The Contrarian’s Guide to knowing God was an exception to the norm…I really liked it!
Most “sermon-series-turned-books” just [...]

Leadership on the Line

I just finished reading Leadership on the Line by Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky. I have to say I was quite impressed.
Many of the leadership books I read seem to be fluff…this one was solid food. I read it for a class I was taking and found my thoughts stirred by the pages [...]

Is our mindset the reason some people thrive and others fail?

It could well be, according to Carol Dweck, author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.
The premise of the book is that people are of the fixed or growth mindset. The fixed mindset believes in having natural talent and abilities that achievement can be attributed to. The growth mindset believes that achievement [...]

How Starbucks Saved My Life

Over Christmas I set aside some time to sit by the fire, drink some coffee, and read “How Starbucks Saved My Life,” by Micheal Gates Gill.
This book had been mentioned in some places I respect and the theme peaked my interest.
The book is a memoir of Micheal Gates Gill and chronicles his “fall” from living [...]
