Do you text?

Texting is in and I think, in some variety, is here to stay. From Textually.org…
Nationally, more than 75 billion text messages are sent a month, and the most avid texters are 13 to 17, say researchers. Teens with cellphones average 2,272 text messages a month, compared with 203 calls, according to the Nielsen Co. (Source)
I don’t think adults are, on average, sending this many. But just as Facebook is taking off with adults, so too is texting. So a question to consider…how is your church engaging folks with texting?

Maybe I shouldn’t be reading blogs this early in the morning. Typically I like open-ended challenges, but I’m racking my brain to think of how to engage the church with text messaging.
My first (and so far only) thought was the pastor or church elders could have lists set up to broadcast cancelled notifications in case of inclement weather. But cell phones are still considered unreliable by some in shoddy weather; you’d hate to think their signal was low, they start driving and on the way to church they get the ‘Cancelled’ message.
Oh! Just thought of a second option with more potential. Use a list like described above to send reminders for business meetings. This would be especially handy if the meeting time changed or is different from the usual.

Announcements are one way, for sure. I think a great way.
I sent text messages to people to let em know I am thinking about them, praying for them, etc. I also ask simple questions that do not require long conversations.
