i was researching the roots of “humility” in one of my theological dictionaries. i found it profoundly interesting that “humble” began as a description of the real poverty of the poor. it wasn’t just a virtue, but a definition of the actual condition of a desperate people who, because of their poverty, recognized their absolute dependence on God as their provider. i think this has important implications for today. we can’t conjure up a feeling of humility without either being actually poor or without recognizing our actual total need of God as our provider. if we have any sense of self-sufficiency, there just can’t be humility in the biblical sense.

Wonderful quote! The older I get, the more truth I see in it. It is a hard lesson–harder than I ever imagined. God bless.
