Pastoral Wisdom from the New York Times

This is from a week ago but I think it speaks volumes to how the church today handles the sin of pastors but not the spiritual formation of them. This is regarding Ted Haggard and his fall.
But Eddie Gibbs, a professor of church growth at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calf., said Mr. Haggard’s accountability structure was a failure. The flaw, he said, was that it provided for intervention only when the pastor was about to crash and burn, rather than establishing a process to check on him routinely to prevent such an outcome.

I agree with this, but at the same time, we are all aware that accountability is a two-way street… on the part of the one accountable and the one accountable too. It is entirely possible to uphold an accountability structure while hiding dark secrets. I question the power of accountability to thwart our sinful natures.

I agree with you, David. It is easy to deceive. But I also think that being proactive rather than reactive is a preferable strategy with respect to pastoral health.
