As per a link on mind mapping and re-reading a book in fifteen minutes, I have been experimenting with mind-mapping applications.

I had narrowed down to Freemind until I found yesterday, via LifeDev, Bubbl.us

Bubble.us is so easy it is amazing.   All you do is click and type.  Really!  When you want to start a new branch of the mind map, hit enter.  Want to add a branch to an existing bubble?  Just go back and click on the bubble…hit enter…and you have another new branch.  That is all there is to it.

I have been using mind mapping recently to write down books summaries and to brainstorm ideas.  I am still partial to a pen and paper for creative work, but with a web or software application, you have a permanent record.  (and the printed copy looks much cleaner than my chicken-scratch hand writing.)

A couple of factors to keep in mind.  First, Bubbl.us does not seem to save automatically.  So, especially if you are working on something important, be sure to save it manually.  Secondly, Bubbl.us does not use the scrolling wheel on your mouse as you would expect…you need to use the arrow keys to navigate your mind-map.  Use the scroll wheel and watch your mind map zoom in and not, not up and down.

As I see it there are only a few downsides.  First, Bubbl.us requires an internet connection…but if you have one, you are gold.  Secondly, unless you want to share you user name and password with someone, there is not an easy way to share your mind map.  (nor track changes)  Third, there is no way to export the mind map you create.  In other words, you can not drop it into a word document or make a PDF out of it.

But to stress again, it is as simple as they come and is free!!!  (Free..every pastor’s favorite word!)  It seems like gold to the individual user with simple needs.  Hack on!
